Creating voxel grids

For QC purposes, it is possible to create a voxel grid or new seismic volume manually (rather than automatically from seismic data) using the Create Voxel Grid form (prepare > Seismic > Tools). The initially created volume has a default attribute with undefined values. You can then fill the attribute with values using property mapping. The data of this default attribute is saved as a .joaseismic file in the folder you specify when creating the voxel grid.

At the top of the form, type a name for the new VoxelGrid, and specify a folder in which the seismic attribute files will be placed.

Geometry tab

Under Settings, select one of the options provided:

If you select 'Use manual settings' you need to specify the dimensions and scaling options.

If you select 'Copy from area', first select the area from the drop-down list. This option will copy the lateral, depth and sampling information of an existing area to easily create a seismic volume that covers a whole area. The dimensions and scaling settings will update automatically, but are still editable.

If you select 'Copy from seismic volume', this will activate the associated drop-down list, and copy the lateral, depth and sampling information of an existing seismic volume to easily create a QC seismic volume that covers the same area as the existing seismic volume. The dimensions and scaling options are still editable.

No. of lines  Number of lines / number of samples in crossline direction.

Line spacing  Spacing between lines / step size between two samples in the crossline direction.

No. of traces/x-lines  Number of traces per line / number of samples in line direction.

Traces/x-lines spacing  Spacing of traces in a line / step size between two samples in the inline direction.

No. of depth samples  Number of depth samples.

Step size depth  Step size between two samples in the depth direction.

Start index line numbering  The start index for numbering seismic lines / line number at the seismic volume origin.

Start index trace/x-line numbering  The start index for numbering traces/crossline samples / crossline index at the seismic volume origin.

Step size line numbering  The increment/step used for line numbering.

Step size trace/Xline numbering  The increment/step used for trace/crossline numbering

Invert coordinate axis  Check this option to swap the inline and crossline directions: Unchecked Checked

Origin tab

Under the Origin tab, the location settings of the new VoxelGrid will be filled automatically if you copy the settings from an area or from a seismic volume. If you use manual settings to create a VoxelGrid, you need to enter the location data yourself.

Easting/Norting/TVDSS  The origin location of the new seismic volume.

Inclination  The inclination of the voxel grid.

Azimuth(GN)  The azimuth (to Grid North) of the grid direction.

Once the voxel grid depth values have been entered, click OK to add the new voxel grid into your solution. If problems exist, an error message will appear in the Output Information view. The newly created voxel grid will appear in all viewers that show voxel grids, as well as in the JewelExplorer.
